For years, I've gone through this process of using the end of the year to reflect about what my plan was and how much of it I got done. There use to be this list. Rigid things that had to get done. Some of them fun, others not so much. But all things that had to get done. I kept score of how much I failed in life to accomplish. How much others accomplished. That is what we all need to do each new year, right? Make a list of things, see what gets done. It sucked the soul out of it.
This year however, I'm taking a different approach. I'm open to new things, directions, places, spaces, people and most significant of all, new relationships. This year, has a theme. Not a list of things.
It is to be adventurous. Not always in an out-there way. It might be as simple as choosing the new thing your local grocer has on the shelve today. It might be as grand as pushing reset on life and seeing where a completely new path leads to.
It guides me to know when to say yes to things, and when to say no.
It is about having a single thing to filter your life for the year with, to see what it pulls into your orbit. You give life some direction, but not so much of it that it feels rigid and out of control when things don't go according to plan. There is some room for error and movement. It gives me room to experiment. To learn. To fall. To grow. To find out who I am. To discover who I'm not.
For life to gently guide you in a direction, and for you to guide it in a direction. It is a give and take. 90% there is good enough. It is about having quality guide you, not quantity. It is easy to get lost in the quantity trap.
There is so much advice and 10 step programs out there to get lost in. Listen to others, but forget their advice. Because all it is at the end of the day, is someone else's outside view of your life, experienced through their own filters on life. Your gut knows the answer. Follow it instead.
Having a single quality theme, cuts right through the clutter, noise and busyness.
2018 is a year of giving life the theme I want for my life, and seeing what answers it come back with. The vulnerability to change is what makes us feel alive in the end. It needs to be a living, breathing thing.
We are all here on borrowed time. You are here on borrowed time. I'm here on borrowed time. Don't fight it so much that you fail to be alive along the way.
2018. Some adventure awaits.
