A strange thing happened on my way to finding happiness. I've over the years checked all the boxes we hear about which lead to happiness. Getting rid of unwanted things and toxic personalities. Keeping a journal and do things out of own choice and curiosity. See the awesomeness in little things and support crazy ones on their journeys. But there was still something missing. It somehow didn't feel complete yet, like there was still a piece of the puzzle missing. It was my misunderstanding of pride that was the problem.
Misunderstanding pride will destroy you if you allow it. It is the mountain tops we attempt to defend at all cost, even if mountains are never meant to be conquered and moved in upon. The whole point is to leave it so the next person can make it to the top. There is no space for a crowd of people. There are infinite other mountains for you to climb and leave again.
We get stuck in the pride of defending our conquered mountains. Thing is, you will die if you don't move on. The lack of air and coldness is not meant to be endure for eternity. I must be honest, until yesterday, I never really understood what it meant or what the point is when people say "swallow your pride". But sometimes it take forgoing an idea you hold onto in life, to bring clarity on when and how you are meant to use it effectively. I understand now that pride is where your values and hard work meet up in the present. It should not drive my decision making, it is a end result of my values.
Don't get me wrong, nothing in this world is as beautiful as someone with pride for what they created. Just look at Steve Jobs or Elon Musk deliver a keynote about their products if you want to see what pride is about. But if pride gets in the way of you making hard but vital decisions in life, you are on a slippery slope away from being happy in life.
