Habits. How do we build them and why do we stop some habits, even if we love what we are doing? I've experienced this over and again the last few year, with everything from diet habits to exercise routines. You start something with all the best intentions in the world, but then loose motivation along the way. Trying to think and remember what the narrative was that got me through it. Or is it the lack of a narrative that made me continue with a habit again after a period of stepping away from a it? Is this a necessary step our subconscious takes to protect us from ourselves? Not too sure to be honest, but the following I know for sure while reflecting on the past on what makes habits fail; You already have too many other habits. We get caught up in the busyness of life. And without knowing add ever more things to our daily lives. In hindsight, maybe it is a sign that you are prioritising and building habits around trivial things over what you really want to do. Less but better is the key, find and identify your essential habits and cut anything else.
You thought the idea of it was cool only to find out there is no point. You have good intentions but what is pulling the habit along isn’t clearly defined yet. It is the lack of a goal for building a habit that can cause you to skip it, because your narrative is pulling you in a different direction. Start with the why, then build your habit around it.
You’re breaking it down into too many little parts. Analysis paralysis is a habit's worst nightmare. It should just be a yes or no answer. Skip the detail, just keep it simple. One of the thing I do to build a new habit is to print a one week calendar. Then all I do is use red or green dots, just indicated whether I did it or not. Not how far or quick I ran that day. Just did I go or not.
Think at times we need to step back from our habits and see them through the lens that has evolved since we started them. And ask the question, "Is keeping this particular habit assisting me to be a meaningful specific?". If we fail to do this from time to time, life will take the habits we love doing the most away first. Because we can do only so much.
It turns out that choices lead to habits. Habits become talents. Talents are labeled gifts. You’re not born this way, you get this way - Seth Godin
As Seth Godin points out, "It turns out that choices lead to habits. Habits become talents. Talents are labeled gifts You’re not born this way, you get this way.” Question is, are the habits you currently keep worth being labeled as gifts?
